The honest truth about sustainable packaging.
Genuinely sustainable packaging is extraordinarily expensive for small businesses. Conventional plastic is cheap. And many so-called compostable alternatives are frequently derived from GMO crops and require industrial composting facilities that most people cannot access. Greenwashing in this space is rampant.
We also looked carefully at where materials actually come from. Many plant-based compostables are sourced from corn or sugarcane, monoculture crops with significant land use concerns. We did not want to swap one problem for another.
Our pouch body is made from NatureFlex, a wood pulp film sourced from FSC and PEFC certified forests. It is certified home compostable and will break down in a domestic compost heap. The reseal strip is a separate material made from paper, met-cellulose, and biopolymer, certified to EN 13432 for industrial composting.
How to dispose of it.
The pouch body can go straight into your home compost heap. The reseal strip requires industrial composting. Check your local council website to find out whether they accept certified compostable packaging alongside food waste. As of 2026, all English councils are required to offer food waste collections, and some do accept compostable packaging. If yours does not yet, the reseal strip goes in general waste for now.
